Multigrain Pancakes, Savory Pancakes – a Review
I was contacted from Mambo Sprouts to do a review of the natural, organic brands they feature on their website.
I was offered to try out the Arrowhead Mills Multigrain Pancake & Waffle Mix. The package came in a few days along with a few books of coupons for Sprouts Farmers Market. I was more than delighted as we do our major grocery shopping from Sprouts.
Most Arrowhead Mills Products are healthy, nutritious and USDA certified organic.
This Pancake and Waffle mix is mostly made with organic whole grains and it has it has 22 grams of whole grains per serving. The texture is not the standard bland; it is that gratifying taste of the whole grains and more grainy than any other brand that I have tried. The way it feels in the mouth reminds me of a light corn bread; it could be because of the presence of the corn flour, as you can see in the Ingredients list below:
One of the nice things (among many) is that the mix does not REQUIRE eggs to make your pancake or waffle (check the baking powder in the ingredient list). All you need is milk/soymilk or water and a little oil. But if you would want to use eggs to make a more wholesome meal, like I sometimes do for my kids, the mix work pretty good with eggs too. We have not made any waffles with this, but have been having pancakes different ways at different times, combined with fruit bites, berries and nuts and they are delightful.
Besides the regular breakfast idea, I thought it would make fantastic quick little savory breads as a side dish or quick bite appetizers/ finger food too. And with thought in mind, I went ahead and tried it out. I combined milk and and the pancake mix, only in a thicker consistency like a paste, added some cumin, cayenne/chili powder, chopped nuts, chopped chili peppers and fresh cilantro and made mini cakes/breads with them on the skillet – exactly in the same way as you would cook a pancake. I have to say that these are going to scrumptious and tantalizing party pick me up kind of food in my home. What an unusual way to have a pancake!
My girls demand pancakes almost every weekend. These pancakes are nutritious and so quick and easy to make that they are good for a weekday breakfast too. With the wholegrain taste, the related health factor and the ease of making them, I do not think I will go back to any other store bought brands. My family loves the light fluffy pancakes and loved the savory cakes even more as they came quite as a surprise.
I do not usually get a pre packed pancake mix from the store. But a choice of a natural, organic and wholesome mix like this one is something which I would not mind buying for my family. It is a versatile little bag, allowing you to enjoy a hearty healthy breakfast, a complete meal with the use of eggs and fruit, nuts and berries or even little snack bites or side breads – all from the same bag.
Mambo Sprouts features healthy and natural living and they have coupons to print on their site!

For a multigrain product, those pancakes do look good. Good to know that the taste was not bland.
Usually pancakes involve much butter. Looks like these don’t. Thanks for the review. Will check it out.
What an unusual and healthier pancake. Great idea to make them savory and this mix looks much better than things like Bisquick when you’re really pressed for time.
